This prison in Herat holds about 140 inmates, some with their children alongside them, whose crimes range from murder and drug trafficking to running away from home. The programme at the prison, which was built by the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team, includes teaching inmates skills, such as carpet weaving, that will help them after release.
